Our updated approach to biodiversity focuses on investments and activities where nature considerations are most relevant.
In connection with the United Nations Biodiversity Conference COP17 in Yerevan, Armenia, Nefco has published its updated biodiversity roadmap that embed nature considerations more systematically into financing, operations and decision-making across the organisation by 2030.
Through the roadmap, we will build on existing experience and selectively test where our activities and partnerships can make a credible contribution to nature.
Katariina Vartiainen, Senior Manager, Environment & Sustainability comments: “Climate and nature are closely interconnected. This roadmap helps us better reflect biodiversity in the way we invest and operate, while ensuring that our approach remains practical, proportionate and focused on where we can make the greatest impact.”
Our biodiversity roadmap aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which calls on governments, businesses and financial institutions to contribute to halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030. Financial institutions have an important role to play in understanding nature-related risks and opportunities and supporting investments that contribute to healthy ecosystems.
Nefco is already advancing biodiversity through various initiatives. Through the Biodiversity Pilot Programme, we work with our clients to identify biodiversity impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities, and incorporate these insights into business strategy and decision-making. Through the Baltic Sea Action Plan Fund, we support projects that improve the ecological status of the Baltic Sea. These initiatives help generate knowledge, strengthen partnerships and demonstrate how biodiversity considerations can be integrated into financing and project delivery.
“Implementation is at the heart of our approach. Through collaboration with clients, partners and other stakeholders, we are building practical experience and learning where financial institutions can make the greatest contribution to nature,” Vartiainen adds.
Building evidence on what works in practice is another key element of the roadmap. Rather than applying the same approach across all activities, Nefco is testing how biodiversity risks, opportunities and impacts can be identified and addressed in investment processes. The lessons learned will inform future financing decisions.
