What is the Nordic Climate Partnership and how does it support Article 6 cooperation?
The Nordic Climate Partnership is a pilot initiative led by Nefco aims to connect Nordic climate ambition, finance and solutions with climate projects that can deliver verified emissions reductions and sustainable development benefits. The initiative builds on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which enables countries, companies and organisations to cooperate on emissions reductions and achieve greater climate impact together.
Working with governments, companies, investors and project developers, the initiative explores how high-integrity carbon finance can help accelerate climate action, mobilise investment and support the deployment of Nordic climate solutions.
How the Nordic Climate Partnership works
The Nordic Climate Partnership is being developed as a platform with three connected elements:
Fund
A Nefco-managed fund that channels capital into high-integrity climate mitigation activities and transfers verified carbon credits to participating investors or users.
Accelerator
Technical assistance and project development support designed to help promising climate projects become ready for carbon finance and investment, while facilitating participation by Nordic companies and solution providers.
Nordic Quality framework for high-integrity carbon markets
Nordic Quality is a practical Nordic approach to high-integrity carbon market cooperation that helps stakeholders navigate evolving international rules and good practices. The Partnership will develop guidance on environmental integrity, transparency, due diligence and responsible use of carbon credits.
Objectives: Mobilising climate finance and scaling climate action
The Paris Agreement’s Article 6 framework is now operational, creating new opportunities for international cooperation on climate action. At the same time, many climate projects face barriers related to financing, project readiness and access to credible demand for carbon credits.
The Nordic Climate Partnership aims to help bridge these gaps by:
- Mobilising additional finance for verified emission reductions
- Connecting Nordic climate ambition with high-impact mitigation opportunities
- Supporting the deployment of Nordic green technologies and solutions
- Developing practical approaches for high-integrity carbon market cooperation
- Creating stronger links between climate finance, investment and sustainable development
We will focus particularly on opportunities in Ukraine, Eastern Europe and nearby regions, while also supporting Nordic companies whose technologies or business models can generate measurable climate benefits globally.
