NEFCO has signed loan agreements with seven Ukrainian cities, Balakliya, Bila Tserkva, Baranivka, Chortkiv, Kamianske, Pokrov and Pryluki, to implement energy-saving measures. The signed agreements total EUR 2.36 million.

The projects involve the refurbishment of public buildings, i.e. schools and day-care centres, and changing street lights to environmentally friendly LED lights. The projects will improve the learning environments for the school children and teachers, resulting in cost savings for the cities from the reduction in electricity and heat usage and lead to considerable CO2 reductions.

In four of the cities, Balakliya, Bila Tserkva, Pokrov and Pryluky, the street lights will be upgraded. Old and obsolete lighting fixtures, including mercury lamps, will be replaced with energy-saving LED lamps, and new remote-control systems, street pillars and cables will be installed. In total, over 6000 units will be replaced.

In Baranivka, Chortkiv, Kamianske and Pryluky, the school buildings will be refurbished. In Baranivka, the town secondary school lacks thermal insulation, so the windows and doors will be replaced and the façade renovated and heat insulation installed. The kitchen equipment and lamps will also be replaced. In Chortkiv, one school building and one day-care centre, originally built in the 1980s, will be renovated. In Kamianske, two day-care centres lack heat insulation, and the building’s heating system will be renovated and insulation measures implemented. In Prulyku, two schools and one day-care centre will be renovated.

Together, these seven cities will reduce the annual CO2 emissions by over 5,500 tonnes as well as the sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and dust emissions. The financial savings for all the cities will total about EUR 470,000 annually.

In addition to NEFCO’s loan funding, the cities themselves will partly fund the refurbishments and installations. Chortkiv and Prulyky will also receive grant funding from the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P).

Our Energy Saving Credits loan programme has funded over 35 projects in Ukraine since 2012, in over 30 cities all over the country. Currently, 24 projects are being implemented. Under the terms of the facility, NEFCO can finance up to 90% or EUR 400,000, in local currency, of the investment costs of any project being financed under the credit programme.
