The international climate policy community is again preparing for the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which this year is being held in Cancún. Formally, the conference will serve as the setting for the sixteenth Conference of the parties (“COP 16”) and the sixth Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (“CMP 6”).

NEFCO will again be present as an observer to the talks, in its capacity as an intergovernmental organisation.

Whilst, it is uncertain if COP 16/CMP 6 will result in a new legally binding agreement on climate change, many hope that significant progress can be made on a number of issues with the aim of reaching a comprehensive agreement next year at COP 17/CMP 7 in Durban, South Africa. Key issues to be discussed will include Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), “fast-start finance” and climate change funding and measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of emission reduction targets.

This year, NEFCO will be contributing to the policy debate at a couple of official side events in association with other Nordic and international actors:

• Wednesday 1st December, at 8.15-9.45 PM at Pavilion, Room 2: NOAK-NEFCO Partnership Initiative Side event co-organised by the Nordic Ad Hoc Group on Climate Change and NEFCO, to describe its joint initiative on piloting scaled up climate mitigation actions.

• Friday 3rd December, 6.00 – 8.00 PM at Cancun Messe – European Side Events Room : What’s New in Financing Climate Change? Global Figures and Concrete Innovations. A side event co-organised by UNEP; AFD, EIB, JICA, KfW and NEFCO.

NEFCO has been participating in these events since the COP11/MOP1 talks in MontreaI in 2005. Ash Sharma will be representing NEFCO in Cancún. He will be present 1-4 December 2010, and is available at the event by phone/SMS on +358 400 811 327.
