On October 4th, NEFCO hosted an international expert event on the subject of financing the emerging climate finance instruments, so called Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs). The workshop was organised in association with the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Bilateral Financial Institutions Climate Change Working Group.
The objectives of the workshop were to identify and discuss key issues in financing NAMA implementation in developing countries, to exchange early experiences from on-going initiatives in Asia and Latin America and provide practical insights for climate negotiators and financing institutions working with NAMAs.
NEFCO has been an architect in the design of the Nordic Partnership Initiative (NPI) in cooperation with the Nordic Council of Ministers’ working group on global climate change negotiations (NOAK). The event brought key participants from the NPI countries, namely Peru and Viet Nam, to share their experiences on NAMAs and the financing thereof.
The event, which was chaired by Ash Sharma, Vice President of NEFCO and Ned Helme, President of the US based organisation, Center for Clean Air Policy, attracted some 50 participants from over 13 countries.
The wide ranging and high participative discussions drew conclusions on financial issues relating to capacity and institution building, preparing and operationalising NAMAs, the modalities and rigor of the instrument in order to build confidence in the integrity of the fledgling mechanism and mobilsing of financial resources including the use of market mechanisms.
