Russia’s full-scale invasion has lasted for more than two years. Severe damage has been caused to the people, infrastructure and environment in Ukraine. Already before the war, the excessive use of fossil fuels and inefficient water management had huge negative impacts on the environment locally and globally – and on the Baltic Sea. The war has only made the situation worse.

Utilities (water, electricity and heating) are vital to a green transition and recovery in Ukraine. Utility services are typically very energy and resource intensive, with significant impact on the climate and environment. Ukraine currently has an enormous need to direct investments to its utilities sector to prevent negative impacts on both the stability of the region and the environment.

Denmark has been a major supporter of the Ukrainian municipal and utilities sector for many years. Rehabilitation of the utilities sector would reduce the negative impact on both the climate and the environment, improve living conditions for the country’s population and eventually stabilise the society – all with an immediate direct or indirect impact also on the Nordic countries. Supporting Ukraine is currently a priority area for all the Nordic countries, not only for security reasons but also from the environmental point of view.

The event looks at how climate and environmental goals can be supported amidst the war through assistance for the municipal utilities sector in Ukraine and what impact that would have on the lives of the people in Ukraine and Denmark. Rehabilitation of the wastewater treatment plant in Lviv, a city located in western Ukraine and in the catchment area of the Baltic Sea, is a practical example of environmental actions in Ukraine funded by Denmark. The project is directly connected to Bornholm and Denmark: Without proper wastewater treatment, untreated water flows from Lviv into the Baltic Sea.

The event aims to address the following questions:

  • What is Denmark’s role in Ukraine’s recovery and green transition? What concrete actions in the utilities sector have been funded by Denmark and why?
  • How does the utilities sector impact the livelihoods of people in Ukraine? How are environmental actions in Ukraine connected to the Nordics?
  • Why is the green recovery crucial not only for Ukraine but also for Denmark and the other Nordic countries?
