COP28: Accelerating the energy transition with Article 6 carbon markets

COP28 – Official UNFCCC side event: Accelerating the energy transition with Article 6 carbon markets

Date & time: 11 December – 13:15-14:45 (GMT+4)
Location: COP28 venue, Blue Zone, Room SE 7

A robust and efficient Article 6 carbon market offers tools to mobilise public and private finance for climate action. This high-level session explores the potential of Article 6 and carbon finance, along with evidence of progress on the ground to support the energy transition.

Three hosts have come together to show how Article 6 can bolster the energy transition through use of high-integrity carbon trading. The opening presentation by International Energy Agency (IEA) will provide context and insight into the far-reaching impact Article 6 can have in the global energy transition. Subsequent panel discussion offers a unique opportunity that brings together the speakers representing both sides of the trade, Sweden and Nepal, along with Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) who offers technical assistance to support Article 6 transactions.

The audience will gain insights into on-the-ground project implementation where carbon trading plays a pivotal role in amplifying the scale of climate actions through interventions from BURN Manufacturing and Nefco’s programmatic activities related to clean cooking and off-grid energy solutions in Sub-Saharan Africa. The event also highlights the undeniable reality that reaching climate goals on the required scale hinges on the active participation from the private sector and features their perspectives on Article 6 markets.
