Engaging public and private sector to co-create impactful off-grid energy business models
Did you know that almost one billion people worldwide still lack access to electricity?
These people have difficulty even getting light to cook or read during dark hours. Not to mention charging their phones. In today’s world, access to electricity is one of the main preconditions of prosperity growth.
Expansion of the electricity grid would be costly, technically difficult and put the environment at risk. Off-grid energy solutions such as mini-grids and solar home systems offer an affordable, clean and quick-to-deploy alternative to grid extension. However, despite great demand, investors are sceptical, and energy companies face great difficulties accessing finance to scale up their businesses in puzzling regulatory frameworks and challenging operating environments.
How can we overcome these challenges?
A new award-winning programme, Beyond the Grid Fund, has proven how a vision of scale with local solutions and an openness for exploring new ways of collaborating can result in innovation, break business-as-usual trends and bring us closer to realizing the sustainable development goals.
Experts from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) and the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) will together with representatives from Liberia and private sector investors Trine and Differ share their experience and look into how we can engage in concrete climate action and scaling up business at the same time, in a financially and socially sustainable way.

The Nordic Climate Action Weeks are taking place in two locations, one at the Norrsken House in Stockholm and one at the Nordic Pavilion at COP25 in Madrid. The two hubs are connected virtually, and this event will be transmitted online between Stockholm and Madrid, so you can follow the discussion from both venues in real-time.

Afterwards you will be able to network over some refreshments, to inspire and get inspired. The event is part of the Financing and Climate Investment Day of the Nordic Climate Action Weeks. You will have a chance to meet and discuss with experts in green financing, sustainable development and growth businesses. The day will be rounded up with a briefing from the climate negotiations in Madrid.
